“What’s with the Robot?” – This is a question we get asked on a fairly regular basis when we go to meetings with clients new and old..
So we thought we’d take five to put down on the Interweb for all eternity; “What IS with the Robot, and where he came from.”
So, when TomandSteve the company was purely a vision in the minds of Founders Tom and Steve, they started discussing that they needed, (amongst other things), an identity. TomandSteve wanted to be seen as approachable, modern, and above all creative. Once the name ‘TomandSteve’ had been selected due to its contemporary and friendly notions, the next task was to create a logo that would be memorable and relevant.
Tom and Steve discussed decided on of the best ways to create a logo was to do what they do best; have a good chat, a brain-storming session, and let the creative juices flow.. It was soon realised that one strong love-affair that both Tom and Steve shared was Robots.
TomandSteve felt the robot reflected many aspects of their business, and at the same time represented something that they both loved. Robots you see, were big in the 1980′s it was a time when every kid wanted a toy robot for Christmas, or a hoover that would clean the floor by itself, robots symbolised the future, and to an extent they still do today.
It’s this combination of both old and new that TomandSteve feel the robot represents for them as a company. The robot is a symbol of technology, it will always continue to be developed and improved, yet, it will always have a place in history since the 1980′s as being super cool too!
So, once they’d decided on the robot it was time to work out what robot they wanted to based their logo on.. They started by purchasing this little fella, and they named him Robby.
They then went about getting some of our very talented freelance friends to convert Robby into a vector graphic for them, which looked something like this…
Now that they had their robot, and the TomandSteve name, they needed to put them all together to form a logo, something that represented who they were, was neat and tidy, readable and once again, creative! The images below show the various stages that they went through..
(They decided they didn’t like the colour palette, and that they wanted to use Green).
Finally, after much deliberation, several design brainstorming sessions, cups of tea, and consultations they arrived at the idea of joining our names up and containing the three core assets, (robot, name, green colour), into one neat little square.
..and the TomandSteve logo was born!
